Johann Hari starts off well in this book. He makes what I believe to be very valid points about the overuse and reliance of Antidepressants and the trap that Big Pharma sets for Psychiatrists and their patients. The nine causes of depression form the foundation for the big set up after the halftime show. They appear well thought out, researched and relevant to today's society. You are essentially hooked and have no choice but to eagerly consume the final act, which is the re-connections. Here in lies the trap. Mr Hari, albeit well intentioned and I believe sincere, exposes the subliminal message which is to advocate for a Socialist welfare state where the value and dignity of self-reliance is shunned and quietly frowned upon. You as an individual are destined to fail as such, and you need community, expanded government welfare, and national income with no strings attached along with labor unions to protect you. To some degree, Mr. Hari does have some valid points. But he takes it too far by cleary championing excessive liberal social justice policies and the necessity of big government without addressing the perils. To be sure, you will see Barack Obama praised, and you will not see Conservative thought champions mentioned. Nice try Mr. Hari. You could have done better by shelving the ideological spin and proposing broader solutions. But kudos to you for exposing the true interests of Big Pharma in the treatment of depression and anxiety. You had me initially, but so disappointed that you turned what appeared to be some good work and intention into a subliminal advertisement for the socialist, utopian welfare state. Enjoy the royalties.
