Okay, I am usually incredibly skeptical when I read about how to raise/train dogs. I've always thought I was a dog mom because "I understood dogs so well." After reading this one, I realized I knew NOTHING about dogs. I read other books, but this one takes it up a whole notch. This is not just about dog training. This is about UNDERSTANDING your dog.I feel like so many trainers tell you how to make your dog walk heel, but they don't tell you WHY they need to walk heel. Some will even tell you that your barking dog needs a pinch collar, when all it needs is to understand it is safe and has a leader to take care of its needs. I love how Nigel in this book put it that it's like treating symptoms but not the cause of the issue.I seriously don't know where to start! I got a new rescue puppy named Adobo a month ago. He's a sweetheart but has major issues with invading people's space for constant pets, and he tends to nibble at our skin when we give our other dog attention. His worst issue is lunging at other dogs on walks, so I had to take a step back and put him back only around our yard. The pup also keeps walking around the house without being able to just settle down. I wanted to see what I was missing because I was growing frustrated as for why he was behaving like this.I read Nigel's book cover to cover. It's so insightful and informative that I couldn't believe I didn't even know anything he mentioned in the slightest as a "dog lover." I decided to implement all of the author's principles, and my dog turned into a different pup in just a matter of hours. It's up to you to decide whether or not you believe me, but I sure do think that dogs, even though not the same as wolves, still have the same needs as their ancestors, so if we show them proper leadership signals, they'll get the hint and start understanding who's in charge.I started isolating him in the bathroom if pushing him away when he nibbled wouldn't work. I had to do it maybe max a couple of times, and he let me pet my other dog. I also followed him where he was walking around (front door, back door, windows) and trying to scout for danger, so I pretended like I was investigating his perceived threats. I thanked him, said everything was okay, and he looked at me with such surprise I almost cried. It's like he wanted to ask me if I seriously understood his intentions. I walked away showing calm and positive body language, and he just followed me and settled down on tiles, where he NEVER would have lied down otherwise. I approach the front and back door several times a day now, so that I can show him I'm paying attention to whatever might scare him, and he always looks at me the whole time until I reassure him everything is okay. He's so much calmer now; I changed my dog OVER NIGHT. I know it sounds like black magic, but maybe I can try to take a video to share with you later.This isn't some crazy magic. This is science. We humanize dogs way too much, thinking that when we tell them "no," they'll get the hint, or that if we give them pets whenever they approach us, we're being good to them.In fact, after reading this book, I know that when Adobo pushes his snout into my hands persistently, he's trying to test my authority, so I either ignore him, push him away, or isolate him, depending on how severe it gets.Now, I really don't know if this is a total coincidence, but he also approaches my other senior dog more frequently and wants to interact with her more throughout the day, as if he understood she's the sibling, not someone he needs to reprimand and protect. As funny as that sounds, he also poops outside without stress because he knows I am scouting for danger, so he can relieve himself peacefully. Even just a few days ago, he would keep looking around for things that scared him, and he'd forget to poop. Once the dog understands you're the leader, it's like everything untangles and becomes so much clearer!Again, not every dog is the same, so I don't know if it'll work like a charm on your dog, but it sure did on mine. I will certainly read it again and take notes in case I ever raise another pup. This is seriously the best approach to dogs I've ever seen implemented. Stop just training your dogs. Understand them. They'll thank you.
